When

7 – 9:30 p.m., April 17, 2019

Einstein predicted the existence of black holes over a century ago when he developed the theory of General Relativity. Today, his predictions are being tested through work being done to take the first-ever images of nearby black holes using an earth-sized telescope array, the Event Horizon Telescope.

The Event Horizon Telescope is set to share groundbreaking results from this effort involving partners around the world. We invite you to meet and hear from the Arizona team that has been integrally involved in this enormous scientific effort to gather the first-ever images of supermassive black holes.

Faculty and students from both the University of Arizona and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory are integrally involved in this incredible feat of science - creating an earth-sized telescope. Join us for a talk with key members of the Event Horizon Telescope as they share the monumental efforts required to photograph black holes and discuss how we will know if Einstein was right. There will be time for questions with refreshments to follow.

(Doors open at 7:00pm; talk to begin at 7:30pm.)
